A Backpacker’s Guide to Camping Air Mattresses

For the majority of backpackers, replacing their trusted sleeping bags with full-on air mattresses is out of the picture. The most common reasons include the air mattress taking up too much space, weighing too much, and being too big. However, these things are changing in camping air mattresses. The comfort you get from this sleeping option is worth the added weight than simply bringing your sleeping bag with you. Each year, the gap between a good camping air mattress and the bulk and weight of a sleeping bag is getting smaller. In short, you now have plenty of camping air mattress options with both lightweight and small-size features, perfect for backpacking.

You should not be quick to make an assumption, though, that all backpackers will switch to using camping air mattresses. For many backpackers, even the best and the lightest camping air mattresses are still an option for going on a lighter hike, especially with a partner wherein they can use two backpacks each. The lightest camping air mattresses weigh between 5 and 6 pounds, and you still have to think about the air pump you will be bringing. Essentially, if you are bringing this air mattress for a short hike, you have to know your camping stuff so that you can choose right.

As a backpacker, there are a few essential things that you should consider in selecting the most suitable air mattress for your camping needs. Keep in mind that choosing a camping air mattress for the trail is not the same as doing so while driving toward the campsite.

In choosing camping air mattresses, you must make sure to go for coils and chambers over air beams. The more chambers you have, the better your outdoor sleeping experience will be. Find an air mattress model for camping that comes with a small compact air pump. Generally, they should run using 4D batteries. Finally, you have to decide about the material of the air mattress you are getting if it is either TPU or PVC.

Considering more chambers in your camping air mattress is vital because even if you get the very best air mattress model for camping out there, you might still not get proper insulation when you sleep at night. The cold rushes you get are a result of the tiny cold air currents swirling inside of the mattress. A chambered design ensures that there will be minimal air movement inside the mattress thereby reducing the cold, tiny swirls of air.

Most camping air mattresses come in PVC material. When worst comes to worst and your air mattress develops a leak or gets a puncture, you will wake up with a useless piece of plastic material. Locating the leak and patching it up as per the instruction manual may not be as simple as it seems. This part is where TPU camping air mattresses come into the picture. A lot of people think that they are designed for people who are worried about the health risks of using PVC.

You should know, though, that TPU camping air mattresses do more than that. The use of TPU material as a backpacker means having minimal chances of getting an air leak in your bed. TPU is more resistant to punctures, does not stretch as much, and is lighter.
